There are many touristic destinations you can try out across the US. From the beaches in Florida or Miami to the great mountains or the frozen beauties of Alaska, there isn’t one type of experience that’s not covered by this mammoth nation. If you’re into skiing and mountains in general, you can safely give Jackson Hole a try. This quirkily named place is actually a valley in western Wyoming, really close to the border with Idaho. The name draws from the experiences a couple of explorers and mountain men had, in the 19th century.
Because the easiest route in the valley, at the time, was via the north entry. From there, these brave men had to descend through some really steep terrain, thus giving the impression of going down into a hole. According to historians, the name of Jackson comes from Davey Jackson, a trapper who activated in the area about 200 years ago, hunting for beaver. This type of animal was and is very common in the area because of the numerous streams and low valleys, which is a very good habitat for this mammal.
The most important city in Jackson Hole is Jackson, which is often named Jackson Hole as well. This city is not very big, as the permanent residents number is below 9.000, but the city is very important because it’s very close to renowned touristic attractions, like Grand Teton National Park or National Elk Refuge. But the little, cozy city is not just a hit and run station, as itself is very close to some fabulous ski resorts and you can definitely camp in one of the nice hotels in town and go skiing, knowing that there’s always a nice, warm room waiting for you back in town.
The Snow King is a traditional ski resort, just outside town, towards south. Although not very large, this is a very challenging route, with steep slopes, which you can enjoy during the night as well, as the King is night lit. A little further out, about 19 km northwest, there’s the aptly named Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, which is much bigger than the Snow King and offers equally challenging routes. Actually, within this resort, you can enjoy one of the highest drops on the continent, ticking in at 1262m. While this is a really attractive challenge for skiers, make sure you’re good enough to go down it and always have a partner with you before approaching this descent.
Another fabulous ski resort close by is Grand Targhee, which is situated around an hour via car to the northwest. The resort was open in the late 1970s and has one of the most spectacular snow falls in the entire US. Besides skiing, the town and region of Jackson Hole are known to have a vibrant art scene, with numerous music and art festivals happening throughout the year, as well as many museums, mainly dedicated wild life, existing in the city. Even if situated in a rocky décor, the city and region are easily accessible by train, car or plane. You can even opt for a private jet charter that can land on one of the small air strips throughout the region and that are conveniently positioned close to all the attractive ski resorts and breathtaking scenery you can explore throughout the year.
